Rusty's Bio: Rusty Gordon moved to the island in 1989 and spent 20 years working and managing Whippoorwill Farm before striking out with his partner Sarah Crittenden. They leave the old dairy store and two acres of surrounding fields at Nip n’ Tuck from the Fisher family. They opened a modified community-supported agriculture (CSA) program. Filled the fields and hoop houses with salad greens, cucumbers, garlic, onions, kale, beans, and tomatoes. Speaker: Tim Boland, Executive Director, Polly Hill Arboretum Program Title: 'North American Trees and Shrubs in Your Garden' Nancy Cabot's second Floral Challenge will take place at 12:45 p.m. prior to the business portion of the Membership meeting. The theme Nancy has chosen is “Almost Spring”. (Stay tuned for 'Challenge details' to be posted on our Floral Design Webpage and via our March Newsletter) By 12:15 pm members should bring their floral interpretations to the Wakeman Center Nancy will introduce the Challenge @ 12:45 pm Meeting Begins @ 1:00pm at The Wakeman Center located in Vineyard Haven / Program Room Refreshments / Social Time @ 12:15pm FREE to MVGC Members / Open to non-members @ $10.00 pp West Tisbury members and VP to provide snacks & refreshments ~ ~ ~ Tuesday, May 21, 2024 Speaker: Denise Guérin, CMMG Program Title: 'Creating Pollinator Habitat Anywhere' Meeting Begins @ 1:00pm at The Wakeman Center located in Vineyard Haven / Program Room GREENHOUSE PLANT SALE for MVGC members with Social Time @ 12:30 Greenhouse Plant Sale from 1:00 - 3:00 pm Our program, 'Creating Pollinator Habitat Anywhere' - The first part of this presentation reviews some pollinator basics: what exactly are pollinators, why are they so important, and why do we hear so much about them? We then explore what pollinators need and are looking for when choosing where to rest, eat, or lay their eggs--in other words “Habitat”! We talk about the importance of habitat, what it is, and how to create and maintain some inviting habitat for pollinators just about anywhere at all! Specifically, the presentation illustrates successful pollinator habitats created in places as different as suburban gardens to apartment decks, and small urban yards and patios to parking lot “hell strips.” Denise's Bio: Denise Guérin is a Certified Massachusetts Master Gardener, graduating in the class of 2022. She fell in love with gardens (and their contents) at a young age while “helping” her father and grandmother in their large family gardens. She volunteers regularly at the Wakefield Arboretum, the Medford Food Pantry Garden, and the MMGA’s new Ohrenberger School Pollinator Garden. Her primary focus is on growing native plants and creating habitat for native bees, birds, and insect pollinators. She is a graduate of the MMGA Speakers Bureau Training Program. A Bonus Educational Program @ The Polly Hill Arboretum, Far Barn on Thursday, June 20, 2024 at 5:30pm Speaker: Adam Wheeler, Production & Horticulture Manager at Broken Arrow Nursery, Hamden, CT Program Title: 'Native Plants with a Twist: Unexpected Excitement from our Native Flora' On June 20, the MV Garden Club in collaboration with Polly Hill Arboretum, will be sponsoring a lecture by Adam Wheeler, Production and Horticulture Manager at Broken Arrow Nursery in Hamden, CT. Adam will speak on “Native Plants with a Twist: Unexpected Excitement from our Native Flora.” Adam stresses that native plants don't have to be boring! In this informative and educational lecture, he will explore the unique and exceptional slide of our native flora and present his current favorite native trees and shrubs for general garden use. This includes design considerations, cultural requirements, and other critical details. A special emphasis will be given toward unusual variation and unexpected use. Both novice and experts alike will find value in the details provided. This lecture will be held in the Far Barn at Polly Hill Arboretum beginning at 5:00 p.m. Registration is required. The cost is $5.00 for MVGC and PHA members and $10.00 for non-members, payable upon registration. Fornari Program Title: "Postcards from Plants" Meeting Begins @ 1:00pm at The Old Mill located in West Tisbury; Refreshments/Social Time @ 12:30 What if you could receive regular postcards from plants that would guide you on your garden and houseplant journeys? Postcards have colorful photos or illustrations that make you wish that you too could visit that destination, and greetings that tell you a bit about the fun to be had there. In this humorous talk, C.L. presents tips, suggestions, and insider information that helps you to become a better garden maker or plant person. Illustrated with graphics created by C.L. from photographs she’s taken, this talk will give advice from Mother Nature and The Green Man’s point of view so that attendees will discover how to use the natural world as their garden coach. Audiences also get a sneak peak at C.L.’s next book, Postcards from Plants: Advice for Garden Makers and Houseplant People. C.L.'s Bio: C.L. Fornari is the author of eight books, including Coffee for Roses and The Cocktail Hour Garden. She’s a professional speaker, the host of GardenLine on WXTK, and co-host of the Plantrama podcast. She is a frequent speaker to groups nationwide and has worked for a family-owned independent garden center for 25 years. C.L. grows vegetables, flowers, shrubs, trees, and numerous other plants at Poison Ivy Acres on Cape Cod. FREE to MVGC Members / Open to non-members @ $20.00 pp Oak Bluffs members and VP to provide snacks & refreshments ~ ~ ~ Tuesday, September 17 Speaker: Jan Weather, CMMG Program Title: ‘Winter Pruning: Why, When, and How to Prune your Shrubs' Begins @ 1:00pm at The Old Mill located in West Tisbury; Refreshments/Social Time @ 12:30 Learn the basics of pruning deciduous shrubs, with an emphasis on structural pruning that can be done during winter, even for spring- flowering shrubs. You’ll come away with new insights and skills, including “how to” info on proper methods and tools. BIO: A Certified Massachusetts Master Gardener and lifelong dabbler in gardens, Jan has a special passion for pruning. Initially self-taught, she (like many of us!) made her share of good cuts and bad until, as an student in the MG course, she learned from professionals. Through advanced educational programs and working side by side with horticulturists, Jan continues to perfect her skills and shares them with other gardeners. Begins @ 1:00pm at The Wakeman Center located in Vineyard Haven / Program Room Refreshments / Social Time @ 12:30 This presentation explains the water cycle on earth – both the natural cycle and the human cycle—and then reviews the local (Massachusetts) impact of climate change on both drought and precipitation. It presents the reasons why, as gardeners and environmental stewards, we need to start adapting to these climate variations to preserve and protect the quantity and quality of our natural resources. The second half of the presentation covers many practical and effective ways of being “Water Smart” to reduce water consumption, improve the environment, and maintain a healthy, productive garden. And save money (so we can buy more plants)! BIO: A Certified Master Gardener Certification Program and a professional engineer who is passionately committed to delivering safe, quality water as an essential community service. During her 40-year career with a global consulting firm headquartered in Boston, Carol has managed many large and complex drinking water projects. Her expertise includes treatability studies, process selection, drinking water research, Safe Drinking Water Act compliance, water supply planning, and water treatment plant evaluations, operations, and design. She participates in several MMGA outreach and educational programs, including managing the soil pH testing team and the outreach garden and training program at the Pondville Correctional Facility. FREE to MVGC Members / Open to non-members @ $10.00 pp West Tisbury members and VP to provide snacks & refreshments ~ ~ ~ Tuesday, November 19 Speaker: Martha Fanelli, Horticulturist, The Gilded Garden & Home Program Title: ' A Floral and Vegetable Holiday Home Decorations Demonstration' Begins @ 1:00pm at The Wakeman Center located in Vineyard Haven / Program Room Refreshments/Social Time @ 12:30 FREE to MVGC Members / Open to non-members @ $10.00 pp Aquinnah/Chilmark members and VP to provide snacks & refreshments ~ ~ ~ December – No Meeting – Holly Day party - date and details TBD ~ ~ ~ Garden Club 'General' Meetings are held the third Tuesday of each month and begin at 12:30 with social time, refreshments and sweet and savory nibbles provided by MVGC members. The meeting/program begins at 1:00pm. The first 10-15 minutes of the 'meeting', address 'MV Garden Club business' and then the Program follows. Meetings are held at either The Old Mill in WT or at the Wakeman Center in VH in the 'Program Room' there. We will post the location of each meeting one month prior on our home page with a program description and short bio on the presenter. At each meeting, there is a 'Social Time' which offers light snacks and refreshments to attendees. It is hosted by the VP's of each Vineyard town (via rotation) and highlights our Club members culinary creations. We encourage the general public to join us for a program that is of interest to them...the charge ranges from $10-$20 depending on the speaker. Our hope is that guest attendees will be inspired to join our Club! *** (The exception in 2024 is the April program which will be on April 23, NOT April 16. Also, there is an additional program slated in June which will be held at Polly Hill Arboretum in their Far Barn. January 16 (Tuesday) - Nancy's Challenge @ the January Meeting! February 10 (Saturday) - A fun workshop and gathering for Valentine’s Day for our members from the Floral Design Committee! Friday, April 5th - PINKLETINK PARTY - HAS BEEN CANCELLED April 23 (Tuesday) - Nancy Cabot's second Floral Challenge @ the April Meeting! (Yes, the date of April 23 is correct for the April meeting!) The theme Nancy has chosen is “Almost Spring”. April 27 (Saturday) - Martha's Vineyard Garden Club's Conservation Committee will be participating in 'Earth Day Event' at the Martha's Vineyard Museum. May 7 (Tuesday) - 10:00 a.m. for a Foraging Field Trip with Past President and Master Forager, Nancy Cabot. (click here for info) May 19 (Sunday) - Martha's Vineyard Garden Club's Conservation Committee will be participating in the 'Climate Action Fair'. May 21 (Tuesday) - MV Greenhouse Plant Sale for MVGC Members - 1:00pm - 3:00pm May 22 (Wednesday) - The History of the Martha's Vineyard Garden Club exhibit at the Martha's Vineyard Museum. The opening of this show will take place at the MV Museum on May 22, from 5:30pm - 7:00pm, with the exhibit located in the hallway area of the second floor. This display will honor the Club's history of both conservation and civic activism though the years. This is a Members Only event; wine and cheese will be served. The exhibit is slated to run until September 20. - CLICK HERE to see images from the Opening on May 22! Thank you Anna & MV Museum for hosting our members! - May 25 & 26 (Saturday and Sunday of Memorial Day Weekend) - Greenhouse Plant Sale at The Old Mill open to the General Public 10:00am - 2:00pm. Do attend to purchase plants and support our Greenhouse Committee's efforts! May 29 (Wednesday) - Spring Clean-Up at the Old Mill from 9AM -12 noon for MV Garden Club Members. We will plant the window boxes and entryway pots and will rake around the giant ferns and cut back any debris. Please remember to bring gloves, rakes and clippers. June 14, 15, 16 (Friday, Saturday & Sunday) - The Club's signature event, Blooming Art at the Old Mill. Take in art from Island artists and enjoy our Club members floral interpretations of each art piece. Attendees will have the opportunity to purchase the art and to see West Tisbury's only building that is on the National Registry of Historic Places, The Old Mill! This event is open to the public. Open invitation, open to the public, stay tuned as details will follow! September 13 (Friday) - The Club's 100th Celebration at the Old Mill for Members - Open to members of the MV Garden Club! Gather time is 4-6PM, more details to follow so stay tuned! December 7 (Saturday) - A Holiday Wreath Decorating Workshop will be held at the Wakeman Center for our members led by Nancy Cabot. Time is noon to 3:30 p.m. This annual event is a favorite for Garden Club members! Join us for holiday wreath decorating at the Wakeman Center.
