This is an Informative Edgartown Garden Tour Celebrating the Vision and the South Water Street Garden of MV Garden Club Founder, Mrs. T.N. Randolph Meikleham (Agnes). On Thursday, August 11, homeowner, author, and horticulture enthusiast Jane Bradbury will lead two tours of her garden, which surrounds the house where Agnes Meikleham, the dynamic visionary and founder of the Martha's Vineyard Garden Club, lived from 1908 until she died in 1953. The English sunken flower garden that Mrs. Meikleham created is set on the edge of Katama Bay in Edgartown and is still flourishing amid much-extended landscaping. This special event and the opportunity to tour this property with the homeowner provides an in-depth look at this one-of-a-kind garden. Through the tour, plant lovers and gardeners will discover many trees, shrubs, perennials, and annuals that can be grown in their own Island gardens and hear about the garden design concepts applied and the many unusual plants. Stories about Mrs. Meikleham and her daughter, Frances, both of whom were passionate gardeners and members of the Martha's Vineyard Garden Club, will also be featured. Jane will share background information about Mrs. Meikleham based on years of MV Garden Club yearbooks and archives as well as her own research about the Meikleham women's lives, their interests and activities. Plant notes and information will be provided in the form of handouts with refreshments and light snacks served prior to the tour. Garden Tour date is Thursday, August 11, 2022.
A rain date is set for Friday, August 12; all the same times will apply. The Edgartown Garden Tour property address is 85 South Water Street, Edgartown, MA. Please allow ample time for parking and getting to the home. Proceeds from these special Garden Tours will support the MV Garden Club's Old Mill Preservation Fund. A bit about Jane: Jane Bradbury has been a long-time seasonal resident of Edgartown. She and her British husband Ivan are keen hands-on gardeners. Based in London and fascinated by social history, Jane is the principal author of American Style and Spirit: Fashions and Lives of the Roddis Family, 1850–1995, published by the Victoria and Albert Museum in 2016. * Questions?
