THE OCTOBER MEETING is at the the Old Mill.
The program begins at 1pm. PROGRAM: The History of the Old MIll WITH: A. Bowdoin (“Bow”) Van Riper, Research Librarian, The Martha’s Vineyard Museum About the Program:
The Industrial Revolution of the nineteenth century came to the Island as it did to the rest of Massachusetts . . . and much of it took place Up-Island. The Old Mill, with its dam and pond, changed the landscape of West Tisbury. It also, by enabling the wool from Island sheep to be processed into salable MV products locally, contributed to the Island’s shift from being a source of raw materials to being (in a modest way) a producer of finished goods . . . like the Old Mill’s famous satinet cloth. The Old Mill’s heyday was brief, but – because of its bucolic setting – it has enjoyed a long second life as one of the Island’s most photographed structures . . . and, of course, the home of the Martha’s Vineyard Garden Club. Illustrated with historic images the talk traces the history of the Old Mill and sets it in the larger context of the Island’s economy as it shifted from farming to manufacturing to tourism. About Bow Van Riper:
A historian by training (BA from Brown, PhD from the University of Wisconsin), Bow Van Riper spent 21 years teaching at the university level before starting one of those “second acts” that F. Scott Fitzgerald says don’t exist in American life. A summer resident of Vineyard Haven since 1963 (when he arrived by baby carriage) and a permanent resident since 2011, Bow has been Research Librarian at the Martha’s Vineyard Museum since 2014. He is also the Editor of the MV Museum Quarterly. For more information about the Museum, go to: mvmuseum.org. |
