About our October speakers:
About Christine and Chuck Christine has been the manager of the Vineyard Gardens’ Garden Center for 30 years. She is a member of the Perennial Plant Association (PPA) and a member of the board of the Holly Society of America. She taught biology at the MV Regional High school for over six years. Chuck is the manager of the landscape division of Vineyard Gardens. He has over 30 years experience landscaping on Martha’s Vineyard and is very knowledgeable in many aspects of the field of horticulture. He is also on the Board of the Holly Society of America. Chuck has a degree in plant and soil science from the University of Vermont. Chris and Chuck are members of the Garden Club and Chuck’s mother, Jane Wiley, was a member for many years. The Program Chris and Chuck will start by discussing plants that are great for extending the fall season and will bring samples of some of these plants. They will also mention plants that can provide significant winter interest that could be with berries, bark or even seedpods. We will also include information on deer resistant plants and methods to prevent your plants from getting eaten, especially in the winter when they are most hungry. They will review the technicalities of putting everything to bed including which plants to cut back, which plants to dig up and store, and the best time to do this. They will also talk about top dressing of garden beds and mulching. Garden Club members will learn a bit more about plants, their care and the soils that they depend on. This will include information on the varied geology of the island and how the soils determine the diversity of plant material. Since hands-on learning is always the most fun, they will conclude with a project that we can all participate in and get out hands dirty! We will divide some perennials that are best divided in the fall. |
