Program Description
In Gardening for the Birds, Angela will focus on the different ways that one may enhance habitat and food sources for birds. Emphasis will be placed on increasing native plant diversity and vegetated structure. With thoughtful backyard management, systems that meet the seasonal diet and shelter requirements of migrating and resident bird species can be created. Throughout the presentation, Angela will make connections between arthropods and birds, and how to support a balanced and dynamic system of producers and consumers. Attendees will receive useful plant lists and resources to help them create healthy and functional communities in their own backyards.
Angela’s goal is for participants to gain a better understanding of the role that insects play in supporting bird populations and the importance of planting native species and creating structural diversity within the landscape. She hopes this presentation will foster an appreciation for natural surroundings and provides best practices for individuals to have a positive impact through thoughtful yard management.

About Angela Luckey

From an early age, Angela developed a fondness for plants and associated wildlife. Curiosity and intrigue for natural surroundings led her to pursue an undergraduate degree in Plant, Soil, and Insect Sciences at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and ultimately obtained a Master’s degree in Environmental Policy and Management. Upon completing her Master’s, Angela sought to encourage and educate the community on how to support our native flora and fauna. As the director of the Natural Neighbors program, she has the pleasure of doing just that. She meets with property owners to understand their interests and values and determine how they may add to the existing features of their property. Angela is delighted by the enthusiasm of property owners to increase habitat and connectivity for wildlife at their homes.
Collectively, over a decade of horticultural experience, she has worked with environmental organizations like BiodiversityWorks, The Nature Conservancy, and Sheriff’s Meadow, and having served as the Assistant Curator/ Lead Horticulturist at the Museum of Science in Boston, MA. She is appreciative for the opportunity to enhance the social discussion and community connection on how to better serve our natural neighbors through this talk on Gardening for Birds, and we are excited to bring this program to the MV Garden Club.
