November 13, 2018 Monthly Meeting

THE NOVEMBER MEETING is at the the Wakeman Center.
The program begins at 1pm.

PROGRAM:  Ikebana: The Art of Japanese Flower Arranging

With Garden Club Members
Barbara Watts and Irene Ziebarth

ABOUT THE PROGRAM:
To help members gain an appreciation of Ikebana, and specifically the Sogetsu School, Barbara and Irene will provide us with a history of Ikebana in Japan, a history of the Sogetsu School and its teacher certification process. They will cover the basic principles of the Sogetsu approach to creating Ikebana.  We will be treated to a demonstration of the basic upright style in a low container as well an arrangement in a tall vase.

Barbara and Irene hope that members will gain confidence to practice the basic styles on their own so that they can enjoy Ikebana in their homes.

ABOUT BARBARA AND IRENE:
Prior to moving to Edgartown, Barbara Watts was a resident of Tokyo, Japan, for eleven years. She studied the Japanese language, as well as many aspects of Japanese culture. Artistically, Ikebana made the strongest impression on her as she studied and practiced under a Sogetsu teacher and attended many exhibitions of Ikebana.

Irene Ziebarth lives in Chilmark and is a retired Resolution Professional who loves flower arranging. She studied Sogetsu in Japan, Washington, DC, and Los Angeles. She recently joined Sogetsu Massachusetts. She holds a Sogetsu Fourth Grade Teacher’s Diploma and has participated in seminars in Japan, Florida, California, and Hawaii.
