THE JULY MEETING is at the the Old Mill.
The program begins at 1pm. PROGRAM: Singers and Springers: Orthoptera of Martha’s Vineyard WITH: Matt Pelikan, Naturalist and Writer About the Program:
Orthoptera – grasshoppers, katydids and crickets - is a widespread and abundant order of insects, playing important ecological roles as plant-eaters and as prey for birds and other insects. Members of the group can be found everywhere on the Vineyard, from yards and gardens to woodlands and beaches. But, these insects are masters of camouflage and concealment. While many of them produce audible calls, Orthoptera are seen infrequently and are not well known. This presentation will offer a survey of the diversity, distribution and biology of Orthoptera on the Vineyard, emphasizing the most common species and describing how to find and identify them. Club members will be surprised to learn how prominently these overlooked insects figure in our most familiar settings. About our July speaker:
Naturalist, writer, and photographer Matt Pelikan has been a year-round resident of Oak Buffs since 1997. While he may be best known as a birder, he has devoted thousands of hours to studying and documenting the Vineyard’s insect life. Matt maintains detailed checklists of Vineyard butterflies, and tiger beetles and across ten years of fieldwork has documented about 50 species of Orthoptera on the island. His current work focuses largely on flies. Many of Matt’s observations appear in a column, “Wild Side” that appears twice a month in The Martha’s Vineyard Times. |
