Steven Raichlen author and PBS TV host, will share stories and recipes
from his book Island Apart.
About our July speaker:
Steven Raichlen is a writer, TV host, and America’s foremost authority on grilling, smoking, and live-fire cooking. The winner of five James Beard Awards and three International Association of Culinary Professionals (IACP) Awards for his many New York Times bestselling cookbooks—also hosts the popular PBS TV shows Steven Raichlen’s Project Smoke ™, Primal Grill ™, and Barbecue University ™, as well as the two French language TV shows Le Maitre du Grill and the new L’Atelier du Maitre du Grill. An award-winning journalist, Raichlen’s work has appeared in The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Esquire, GQ, Saveur, Food & Wine, Bon Appétit and many others. In 2016, he was inducted into the Barbecue Hall of Fame. In 2012, Forge published his first novel, a love story set on Chappaquiddick called Island Apart. He was the first journalist to circumnavigate the globe to document how people grill in different cultures, and a pioneer in chronicling the micro-regions of American barbecue. He ushered in the modern age of live fire cooking and his work has birthed a generation of writers and enthusiasts. Founder of Barbecue University at the Broadmoor resort in Colorado Springs, Raichlen serves as barbecue curator for the Southern Museum of Food and Beverage in New Orleans. He has lectured on this history and culture of barbecue at institutions as diverse as Harvard, the Smithsonian, and the Library of Congress. Raichlen received a Watson Foundation Fellowship to study medieval cooking in Europe, as well as a Fulbright to study comparative literature. He holds a degree in French literature from Reed College and trained at the Cordon Bleu and La Varenne Cooking schools in Paris. Alley's General Store in West Tisbury: Note: The Old Mill is less than 1/10th of a mile from Alley's General Store. Pass Alley's General Store on your left. Drive 200 feet, and turn right onto the Edgartown Road (toward the Airport and Edgartown). The second driveway on your right leads to the Old Mill's parking area. Driving directions from the entrance to the MV Airport
(at the intersection of Airport Road and the Edgartown: Head west on the Edgartown Rd toward West Tisbury Center. Drive 3.8 miles. The Old Mill will be on your left, directly across from Mill Pond. The driveway is immediately beyond the building. From Vineyard Haven and Up Island Cronig's:
Pass Up Island Cronig's (469 State Road) on your right. Turn left onto Edgartown Road (toward the Airport and Edgartown). The second driveway on your right leads to the Old Mill's parking area. IMPORTANT: From July through September, all meetings are held at the Old Mil on the Edgartown Road in West Tisbury. Parking is limited. Please carpool.
