January 15, 2019 Monthly Meeting

THE JANUARY MEETING is at the the Wakeman Center.
The program begins at 1pm.

PROGRAM:  A Tick Can Make You Sick:
Reducing Tick-Borne Illnesses on Martha’s Vineyard

With Richard Johnson, Biologist, Martha’s Vineyard
Tick-Borne Illness Prevention Initiative

ABOUT THE PROGRAM:
Dick Johnson will present an overview of different types of ticks on Martha’s Vineyard, their lifecycles and ecology and the diseases they carry.  The remainder of program will focus on personal protection and preventive measures people can take in their yards and gardens.

ABOUT DICK:
An Island biologist and naturalist, Dick was the Executive Director of Sheriff’s Meadow Foundation for 18 years.  Since 2011, he has been part of the Tick-Borne Illness Prevention Initiative sponsored by the Boards of Health of the six Island towns, more commonly referred to as The Tick Program.  The Tick Program is now administered by Dukes County on behalf of the towns.  During this time he has conducted over 600 yard surveys and tick habitat assessments and advised hundreds of homeowners on steps they can take to make their yards safer and prevent tick-borne illnesses.
